Shines forth the resplendent complexion of Shakyamuni Buddha. Draped in a robe that reveals rather than conceals the major part of His broad-set, olive-complexioned shoulders, He bears naught but an almsbowl and lifetimes of dukkha in those half-shut eyes. On either side of the jewel-petalled lotus He is seated on, stand the finest of His disciples, mendicants as they are.
The thangka that you see on this page is a particularly colourful visualisation of the Buddha. Besides the Shakyamuni, there are (clockwise from top left) Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Padmasambhava, Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara, Heruka, Palden Lhamo, Mahakala, Green Tara, and Manjushri.
In the background, gossamer clouds in pale pastel tints of blue and green. Floating about snow-coated peaks of the mysterious Himalayas. Azure and peach-coloured blooms of a mystical beauty. Deep blue waters that resemble the depth of the Buddha’s samadhi (yogic contemplation).
