Step into the world of Samantabhadra, a bodhisattva highly regarded in Mahayana Buddhism. Samantabhadra means Universal worthy or all virtuous in Sanskrit, and it is also known as Puxian in Chinese Buddhism. It is uncommon to find him shown alone in a Thangka because he is also regarded as one of the Sakyamuni triads, alongside Manjushri and Gautama Buddha.
Samantabhadra is shown in heaven as riding a white elephant with three heads or six tusks. These six tusks also represent the Six Perfections or Paramitas: charity, morality, patience, diligence, contemplation, and Wisdom. It is believed that the elephant that Queen Maya saw in her dream was the same elephant that Buddha's mother saw to announce his birth. He is frequently shown in a meditative position and with a serene demeanor.
