Standing against the backdrop of a bunch of Ghanta (bells) of a shrine, which represent the Brahma-Nada (sound of the supreme divine truth) that he eternally chants and hears, the subject of this oil on canvas painting by Jugal Sarkar, is a Sadhu, infusing the ambiance with his solemn stillness. With his Jatas and face smeared with the ashes of Shmashan, the Sadhu affirms his links with the Shaiva sect. Gazing at a point outside the canvas, the Sadhu with his presence takes one to the Melas of Kumbha, where groups of such ascetics crowd the city of Shiva, chanting Om Namah Shivaya, which seems to be echoing through this sacred artwork.
