Set in the bedchambers of Rukmini, who would come to be the first queen consort to Lord Krishna, this Tanjore painting captures the beautiful, devout woman in a moment of deep learning.
It is said that once upon a time, the daughter of the Vidarbha king, Bhishmaka, fell in love with the Supreme Lord Krishna merely by hearing about his beauty and glory. She wanted him as her husband right away. However, while the rest of her family was joyous at the idea, her brother, Rukmi, is opposed to it. When he insists that she get married to Sisupala instead, she is devastated and pens a letter to her lord, asking him to take her away with him and not let Sisupala pollute her. Holding a rose in one hand and a missive for Lord Krishna another, Rukmini stands overcome with divine love. Krishna too, upon receiving the letter, wants to wed Rukmini. He elopes with her and she gets her heart’s deepest desire. In the painting, she stands before an open window that overlooks a beautiful view of mother nature joining Rukmini in her pining. Her golden skin is complemented by golden clothes, making her shine despite the complexity of the compact background.
