Stone has always been the basic material for some of the most beautiful embellishments, combining the skills of the painter, calligrapher, inlay work, mosaic etc.

This painting on a marble tile exudes opulence. The treatment is folkish, colours are rich and there is a certain dynamism. The coy beauty with downcast eyes is dressed as a bride atypical of the gypsy tribes of Rajasthan. For them jewellery is not just decorative in purpose but has inherent meaning and significance. What is most striking about this painting is the jewellery which is crafted with stones. The glass stones are not inlaid but laid externally lending a three dimension effect to the ornaments. The large triangular chunks of earrings are held in place by pearl strings. The different colour glass stones in the necklace lend a brilliance to the painting, as does the elaborate nose ring, a typical bridal ornament.

Not to be overshadowed by the ostentatious jewellery, the painting speaks of refined technique and draughtsman ship. Fine as a hair, as clear and definite as it is possible for human hand and eye to make it, the line of the feature in this painting is a remarkable piece of execution. Excellent though the outline is, it is equaled by the subtle modelling of the features themselves, so essential to the life and character of the portrait.
