A woman who had just given birth. Her two friends are keeping her company in order to look after mother and baby. The newborn, wrapped in a piece of brilliant pink silk, is nestled in the crimson skirts of its mother.
From the lehengas and silver jewellery of the women, it is discernible that they are of Rajasthani, probably tribal, origin. The mother’s dupatta is tie-dyed, while those of her friends are diaphanous. The colours and styles they are wearing are dull compared to the new mother’s brilliant and colourful attire, which brings out her first flush.
The three ladies are seated on the ground. The baked earth walls of their humble dwelling is behind them. The texture in these elements of the painting has been achieved with the stippling technique.
