In India, rivers are given a divine status. The river Ganga has been worshipped since ancient times. The Gangadhara legend traces the origin of the river Ganga to Heaven.

It was during the 4th century A.D. that anthropomorphic figures of Ganga and Yamuna started appearing in art and architecture (as on shrine doors). Ganga is known for her purity and divinity. Hence she is painted here in pure white. Even the fish that she rides upon is white. The frill of her garment is painted pink giving it an illusory look of a lotus seat. A number of head ornaments and other jewellery decorate her divine body. A halo around her head define her status.

Surrounding the muddy waters is the foliage bearing flowers, around which are white icy mountains. Curling clouds in the clear blue sky is characteristic of the Pahari school. Floral decorations around the oval subject speak of Mughal inspiration. The main border conflicts with the painting.
