Sitting underneath her portable tent, the pot seller in this oil painting emanates an alluring beauty. She is dressed in deep red, the color of youthfulness, passion, and love. The pots she has made lie huddled in the background. Waiting for the buyers to arrive, the pot seller covers her face while letting her gaze travel far. There is a quality of liveliness in her almond eyes, which draws the onlooker and probably customers closer to her.
The association of woman and the earthen pot is also found in the Sufi Punjabi folklore of Sohni and Mahiwal, where Sohni attempts to cross the river floating on a pot, but drowns in the raging river. Looking at the somber eyes of the pot seller, one wonders if by looking at her pots, she is reminded of this tale of the two lovers.
