This is a Tanjore painting portraying Goddess Gayatri who is considered to be the personification of the powerful Gayatri Mantra mentioned in the Vedas. She is also revered as a form of Saraswati, the eternal consort and internal potency of Lord Brahma. As the characteristic feature of Tanjore paintings, this painting is also precisely embellished with gold inlay work studded with the sequences of tiny square-shaped stones along the outlines. This embellishment adds to the beautification of the entire painting and makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
Having five faces (panchamukhi) that represent the five koshas or sheaths (Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vigyanmaya and Anandamaya) with which the jivas (individual souls) are covered and ten arms carrying different items, Goddess Gayatri sits on a beautiful lotus blown in an ocean. With her five left arms, she holds a conch shell, a lotus, a pot of ambrosia, an arrow, while the anterior hand is in the boon granting Varada Mudra. With the five left arms, she carries a discus, a mace, an axe and a lotus, while the other hand is in Abhaya Mudra (hand gesture of fearlessness). She is gracefully attired in a green silk saree that shines throughout the painting and sits in lalitasana; her left leg folded above while the other one going down. A big and round aureole behind her five crowned heads describes her divine power. Finally, the Prabhavali (arch) bearing beautiful carvings of typical Indian motifs gives the essence of the rich Tanjore style artwork.
