The pages of Devi Bhagavatam are filled with legends of goddess Parvati, the queen of Kailash, and the supreme protectress being visited by gods seeking refuge and help from her. With every Asura (demon) that attacks the world, the gods run to the great mother goddess and ask her to intervene and annihilate the demons. This Kangra-style watercolor on paper with a rich red border presents the scene of gods visiting goddess Parvati, who takes a throne on the left half of the canvas, seated on a lotus which symbolizes the Universe which is guarded by her.
The tiger crouching near the goddess represents her ferocious powers and royalty. Devi Parvati is depicted in a Chaturbhuja or four-armed form, dressed in a traditional Kangra veil and skirt, and jeweled ornaments. Seven gods are present in Parvati’s court held in nature, bowing their heads and joining hands in poses of subordination. Beautiful flowers line the foreground as nature’s offering to Parvati, with two trees growing to infuse the scene with natural beauty.
A conch or Shankha is placed on the goddess’s seat, an ancient instrument blown at the beginning of a battle as a declaration of war and victory. It seems that the Deva-vrinda or cluster of gods are pleading with the great mother to pick her conch and announce the beginning of a virtuous battle.
