Tanjore paintings are famous for their exquisite depictions of devotional icons and this painting, Goddess Gajalakshmi is portrayed in the most wonderful way. She is one among the eight primary manifestations of Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi), who is considered to be the giver of power of royalty, fortune and prosperity in lives of the devotees. She is extremely merciful and blesses the individual souls with material and spiritual wealth.
The Goddess is depicted seated on a throne in Ardhapadmasana; her left leg placed on the floor while the right one on the throne. Attired in a bright red saree and adorned with several jewels on her fair complexioned body, she appears like a shining star. As she sits in that posture, the perfect pleats gracefully open up between her legs. She holds a lotus flower in each of her upper hands that symbolize the purity of consciousness. The lower hands are in the boon granting Varada Mudra and Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness). A stream of flow of gold coins can be seen pouring down from her right hand as well as a pot held around her left hand. As her name suggests (Gajalakshmi meaning Lakshmi with elephants), she is flanked with two white elephants on her either side. They lift their trunk up as if glorifying the Goddess. The use of vibrant colors and pure gold coating give an aesthetic look to this painting.
