Out of the eight primary manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi), Gajalakshmi is the giver of power of royalty and prosperity in the lives of the devotees. Lakshmi being the Goddess of fortune, blesses the individual souls with both material as well as spiritual wealth. The term Gajalakshmi means ‘Lakshmi with elephants’ and thus, the most significant aspect of Gajalakahmi is the presence of elephants around her.
In this Tanjore painting, Goddess Gajalakshmi is depicted seated on a throne in Ardhapadmasana; her right foot placed on the throne while the left one going toward the floor. She is beautifully clad in a silk saree and as she sits in this posture, the perfect pleats of the saree gracefully open as a fan between her legs. Adorned with a huge crown on her head and several jewels on her molten gold complexioned body, she looks just like the glowing sun. She holds a lotus flower in each of her upper arms. The lotus flower symbolizes purity of consciousness. Her lower hands are in Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness) and the boon granting Varada Mudra. A stream of gold coins pours down from her left hand. Also, she is flanked with two white elephants (Gaja) on her either side. They gloriously lift their trunk up in in order to glorify the Goddess. Every bit of this painting is embellished with pure gold coating which is the characteristic feature of Tanjore style artwork.
