Devout Hindus know all about Goddess Lakshmi’s eight major avatars/incarnations. Each avatar is there for a specific purpose that will benefit all humankind. One such avatar is Gajalakshmi. Gaja refers to an elephant, in Sanskrit. Therefore, two beautifully decorated, white elephants (a male and a female) flank her on either side. Their trunks continuously spout water, indicating that they are paying obeisance to the Goddess. The graceful and beautiful Goddess, herself, adopts the padmasana pose, while seated on a splendid lotus flower. Similar to the elephants, Gajalakshmi represents a royal, yet serene appearance.
This Tanjore-style painting shows her to have four arms. Two of them, on either side, cling to two lotuses. A lotus flower is the symbol of spiritual enlightenment, purity, compassion, and self-regeneration/transformation. The other two arms promise humanity, freedom from fear (abhaya mudra - right palm) and receiving protection (varada mudra – left palm). Gajalakshmi is the Giver of Animal Wealth, wherein she awards prosperity and abundance to people rearing livestock for a living. She ensures that all the darkness in their lives disappear, and there is the entrance of light and wisdom. It is why her devotees offer food to her during worship. The Goddess appreciates humility and simplicity the essence of which is captured perfectly in this exquisite Tanjore painting.
