Among India's more seductive depictions of romantic love are those painted in the Punjab Hills, combining the tender lyricism of local traditions and Vaishnavite poetry.

Radha and Krishna, the much celebrated couple stand at the banks of Yamuna, looking deep into each others eyes. The emotions that they feel in this painting are intensely passionately human. Krishna's appearance corresponds perfectly to iconographic descriptions - blue bodied, clad in yellow dhoti, wearing a crown, adorned by a long elegant garland of wild flowers. But Radha's ghagra-choli gives way to a local attire. Nevertheless, she looks beautiful with jewellery adorning her body.

Lotus flowers and leaves dot the flowing waters. The dense tree under which they stand send out flowering branches in order to touch the couple and be blessed. The distant perspective shows huts and turrets on the left and another lotus pond on the right.

This description by Renu Rana.
