This Tanjore-style painting shows a joyfully chubby, infant Krishna sitting contentedly on a golden throne. Colorful curtains form a charming arch over the throne He is Navaneeta Krishna, reclining against a large bolster at his back. Navaneeta refers to butter-like in Sanskrit. The young child, with his tender and smooth skin, gentle smile, and bright eyes, has a smile for everyone. Krishna’s excessive craving for butter is visible in the way he is lovingly clasping a large pot of butter in his left hand. There is even a pat of butter in his right hand. The cows, trees, and Govardhan mountain, depicted below the throne, are representations of Brindavan.
Baby Krishna is only attired in dazzling and uniquely-designed jewelry. There is even a garland of flowers around his neck. The ornamental headgear resting on the topknot of his hair is unusual. The peacock feather, which is precious to Krishna, is also present. The feather is a representation of nobility, pride, glory, and immortality. The infant is flanked by two gloriously bejeweled women – Yashoda and Rohini. These women are holding small balls of butter in their hands. Yashoda is the foster mother of Krishna, while Rohini is the consort of his father, Vasudeva.
