With a charm that enchants everyone, this Tanjore painting depicts Lord Krishna in his Navneeta form. Lord Krishna is the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is considered the supreme God in many cultural Hindu communities. Krishna sits on a cushioned pedestal, flanked by Gopis who are pampering him and bringing him offerings. Portrayed in the dusky, dark skin that endears him to one and all, Lord Krishna looks divine and comfortable on his pedestal.
All the divine Gopis wear sarees of yellow and green silk and envelop their devotion and compassion for Lord Krishna. Krishna’s ornaments go hand in hand with the gopis’ sarees and are embossed with gold and inlaid with colorful, gleaming high vibrational stones. One of his sincere Gopi is holding a parrot, who is seen as a symbol of devotion and enduring love, which is what Krishna inspired in his devotees.
Below the painting in a separate frame, two other instances of Bal Krishna’s innocence and mischief are portrayed. He was always revered by all living beings, man and animal alike. A cow feeding her calf watches over Krishna stealing butter in amusement and affection while on the left a deer watches him enjoy the spoils of his mischief. Embossed with gold and inlaid with studded stones, this painting is truly joyful.
