Encompassing the entire pantheon of thirty-three crore gods and goddesses, Nandini the holy cow stands in all her glory in this Tanjore painting. She is the daughter of Kamadhenu, the cow who was an endless pot of luck and material wealth for anyone who was her owner. She is also often called Surbhi, meaning a celestial, or wish-fulfilling cow. Much like her mother, Nandini is also a generous provider to her owner.
Once upon a time, she was owned by Rishi Vashistha and provided milk to him to perform ceremonies and auspicious events like a yagna or an abhishekam of the Shivling. However, she was coveted by many. On an unfortunate occasion, she was captured by the Vasus from Rishi Vashistha’s ashram for selfish reasons. Upon hearing this, Vashistha was angered and he cursed them to be reborn on the earth as sons to Shantanu and Ganga. He then brought Nandini back to the ashram where she resided for several years before she and her mother Kamadhenu both moved to Indralok. She is said to be now residing in Goloka and all the cows on earth are worshipped in her stead. They too now represent the presence of all the gods and are venerated dutifully.
