The calm, sweet image of the Medicine Buddha. Bhaishajyaguru, the name of the Buddha as expounded in the ancient Tibetan healing scriptures. Sapphire complexion set off by robes of marigold and peach; gentle features that soothe the onlooker with the sheer harmony of line and proportion and expression.
The traditional Tibetan thangka painting that you see on this page depicts Bhaishajyaguru amidst the Buddhist heavens. Rock and verdure and snowfed streams in the background. Monks in the foreground paying homage to Him. But for the seated monk figures in the canvas, the colour palette comprises pale pastels that almost blend into one another.
This effect has been brought about by the gouache technique applied with acrylics. Metallic hints on the robes of the Buddha as well as the landscape are of pure 24K gold. Together with the perfect iconography - from the padmasana to the sprig of myrobalan in His right hand - this painting is a fine example of the authentic traditional thangka.
