A simplistic, almost monotone brocadeless thangka. On a fabric-based canvas of superior cotton fabric, the figure of the seated Bodhisattva Manjushri has been etched in acrylic gouache pigments. His legs are gathered in padmasana. In His left hand is a magical-stemmed lotus, within the belly of which rests a pothi (scripture). With the right hand, He raises a sword high above His head.
Sleek black tresses contained in a bejewelled gold crown. A handsome brow, and the gaze of omniscience. A wide-mouthed lotus-shaped throne with mythical flowers and sashes floating about the seated Bodhisattva. Despite the minimalistic lines and curves, the artisan has poured a great deal of expression and detail into the composition.
In the foreground of the golden ochre canvas, the artisan has painted on the figures of Avalokiteshvara and Heruka. Along the upper edge of the canvas are the pancha-tathagatas, each of whom is a spiritual vector of the Buddha Himself.
