"Bhairavi"- she who causes fear with her appearance, the feminine energy of Shiva as Bhairava, is one of the Dashamahavidyas, revered by Sadhakas who envision her as an ethereal Yogini, who bestows upon them the power to activate the dormant Kundalini Shakti. In this watercolor painting, the otherworldly allure of Mahavidya Bhairavi is brought to life, in the idiom of Kangra.

Against a multitude of lush green hills, Bhairavi with skin like the smoke that rises from funeral pyres stands, riveting the onlooker with her form. Her bare physique is laden with serpents, a garland of skulls, Rudraksha bead roasteries, rings, and her luscious tresses. In Bhairavi's feet are anklets, which with thumps of her feet declare her arrival to the enemies of the virtuous.

A crescent moon, similar to the Chandra on Shiva's Jata, adorns the exquisite countenance of Devi Bhairavi, which appears heavenly with her lotus eyes and inwardly smiling lips. Attired as if to mirror Shiva-Mahadeva, goddess Bhairavi in this roopa dispels fear from her devotees, making them free from the noose of Bhaya and Kaala (time, death).
