The traditional iconography of Devi Lakshmi, captured in the Tanjore idiom. The key elements of Her traditional iconography are lotuses in Her posterior hands, a pot of gold symbolic of plenitude, and, of course, a pair of gaja (elephants) raising their trunks in homage to Her.
The Tanjore painting that you see on this page does aesthetic justice to each of these elements. There is a symmetry - a kind of serenity - predominating the canvas, from the flow of Her crimson silk sarees to the ornate temple entrance structure surrounding the seated figure.
Besides the luxuriant gold embellishment, the diverse colour palette makes this a striking work of art. Note the emerald green upholstery and the pale pink of Lakshmi’s flower garland, the insides of the gaja’s ears, and the undersides of their trunks. Dark red and green stones inlaid into the gold bits give off the impression of rubies and emeralds.
