The Tanjore painting that you see on this page exquisitely portrays Lord Venkateshvara along with His eternal consort Goddess Lakshmi. The Lord appeared on the earth to revive the lost God consciousness of the people of Kali Yuga and is now the presiding deity of Tirumala Temple at Tirupati in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Just like heat cannot be separated from the fire or sunlight cannot be separated from the sun, similarly, the Lord is incomplete without His devoted wife Lakshmi who is always engaged in His loving service.
Here, Lord Venkateshvara is elaborately adorned with heavy and effulgent ornaments from His head to His lotus feet. The wide and bright tilak (Urdhva Pundra) on His forehead covers most of His nose and sets off a unique contrast with His pure black complexion. He holds the Sudarshan Chakra and the Panchajanya Conch Shell in His two upper hands while the lower hands are in the boon granting Varada Mudra and resting posture. A serpent is also coiled around the upper arms. Lakshmi, the Goddess of fortune sits next to Her Lord on a huge throne in Padmasana. She is gracefully attired in a golden embroidered saree with perfect pleats and holds a lotus flower in each of her upper hands, while the lower hands are in Abhaya and Varada Mudra. Both the Lord and the Goddess are surrounded by a beautiful Kirtimukham Prabhavali which adds to the beautification of the entire painting. The vivid colors and the lustrous pure gold coating make it really eye-catching.
