Here is a majestic painting of Lord Venkateshvara, also known as Balaji, who is the form of Lord Vishnu, who appeared on the earth in Kali Yuga to deliver the fallen fouls from the ill effects of the age of powerful Kali. He is the presiding deity of the very famous Tirumala Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Thousands and lakhs of devotees come everyday in the temple to take the Lord’s divine blessings. One thing that makes Tanjore paintings unique and stand out from the ordinary ones is their embellishment with pure gold coating studded with sequences of shining stones.
In this painting, the Lord is elaborately decorated with several gold ornaments starting with a huge crown on His head and heavy chains around His neck, to thick anklets in His lotus feet. With His two upper hands, He holds the divine Sudarshan Chakra and Panchjanya conch shell, while the lower hands are in the boon granting Varada Mudra and resting posture. A serpent is coiled around His upper arms. Since Goddess Lakshmi is the eternal consort of the Lord, she is always present with Him in the form of a sacred symbol known as Shrivatsa on His chest. Just as heat cannot be separated from the fire, likewise, Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu can never be separated from each other. The Lord also bears the effulgent Kaustubha gem upon the chest which glows like the sun. The wide and bright tilaka (Urdhva Pundra) on His forehead covers the most part of His nose and sets off a unique contrast on His black complexion. The beautiful Kirtimukham Prabhavali surrounding Him adds to the beautification of the painting.
