Lord Shiva is in the company of the arrestingly beautiful Devi Rajarajeshwari. She is the Tripura Sundari, a particularly beautiful manifestation of Devi Parvati. Despite His pristine dhoti and the world of adornments on His person, the tigerskin loincloth of Lord Shiva is in place. She is clad in a saree the colour of peaches, which almost blends into Her roseate skin. In keeping with Her signature iconography, She is carrying in one of Her hands a sprig of sugarcane that is symbolic of sweetness and nourishment.
The classic Tanjore painting is a blend of Deccani and European influences. In keeping with the genre’s age-old style, this painting features a statement colour palette, traditional iconography, and extensive gold-leaf embellishments gessoed skilfully onto the same. Zoom in on each aspect of the work in order to appreciate the high-precision gesso work and how iconographically replete it is (the multi-headed Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu flanking the goblet of offerings, and the moon-like face of Devi Durga upon Lord Shiva’s crown).
