Murugan or Karttikeya in Hindu tradition is the embodiment of the union of Shiva and Shakti for the protection of Srishti. He is the commander-in-chief of Indra’s army and the mighty slayer of Tarakasur. In this Tanjore painting, the valor of Kumara has been presented beautifully. The deity in a firm stance stands under a grand aureole, with red-eye Kirtimukha gazing threateningly at negative forces. Murugan is adorned regally, with golden embellishment and floral garlands that add to the magnificence of his presence. With enlivened expressions on his visage, Kumara removes all fears, creating space for his benevolence to fill the heart of the devotee.
