The dark-skinned and mischievous youth, Krishna is the favourite of all the damsels of Vrindavan and Brij. They love him with all their heart and, indebted to their Sneha (affection), he always reciprocates. But to Radha, this is unacceptable. How can his beloved meet some other woman, while she is earnestly awaiting his arrival?

Thus, hurt and angered, Radha’s love turns into a pride-filled sulkiness, an emotion which is called Abhimana or Mana (pride) in Vaishnava bhakti tradition. She refuses to have a look at her lover Krishna, who, bound by the love of his chief Sakhi (friend or lover), tries different means and his sweet words to pacific Radha. This lovers’ spat,  an adorable part of the story of Radha and Krishna, beautiful because of its very human and relatable feel, is a favourite theme for artists looking to bring emotions to the canvas. Here, we have a lovely watercolour by Kailash Raj, showing a sullen Radha being soothed by Krishna.

Radha is draped in fine attire and gorgeous jewellery, which she had put on in the anticipation of the arrival of Krishna. Her face is turned away from her beloved, refusing him the right to catch a look of her exquisite visage. Krishna himself is dressed in a charming yellow and adorned with flowers, ornaments, and peacock feathers. The birds- a symbol of beauty and pride, can be seen in the background, suitable addition to the scene as a representation of Radha's pride. Krishna has brought lotus flowers as a token of apology for Radha, which she has accepted. Seeing hope with her acceptance of the gift, Krishna continues with his efforts. These spats of the divine couple always end in Pranaya- the coming together of the lovers, which is another ethereal theme for artists and poets to follow.
