Krishna is “Raaseshwara”- the Lord of Raasa, the divine play between him and the Gopis in which the Rasa (sweetness) of heavenly romance and devotion flows, unhindered, eternally. In this Tanjore painting, the heart-warming proximity between Krishna and Gopis is magnificently celebrated. Krishna as a youthful divinity, sits on a Simhasana, accompanied by two Gopis, dressed in the traditional attire of South India, embracing the Lord. The expressions of all three convey bliss and the nectar of romance and are delineated to perfection by the artist. The playfulness of the Gopis, represented by their graceful bodies, reminds one of the creepers embracing the arms of a tree- nourished by the closeness and becoming the ornament of Krishna.
