The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, said in the Bhagavad Gita that whenever and wherever there is a decline in Dharma and increase in irreligious practices, He descends Himself. Therefore, in Dwapar Yuga, He appeared on the earth to fight against Adharma and engage His beloved devotees in His transcendental pastimes. Everyone in Vrindavan loved Him with their heart and soul. Although Krishna appeared as an ordinary child, His uncommon and mystic activities were always an astonishment for everyone.
This Tanjore painting depicts a wonderful pastime of Lord Krishna subduing a demoniac serpent called Kaliya who lived in the Yamuna River near Vrindavan. The serpent released its poisonous fumes in the water and the area near the river was being polluted day by day. The people of Vrindavan were very disturbed by the presence of this serpent. The true savior of all the living entities then challenged Kaliya. Here, the Lord can be seen dancing victoriously on the hoods of the serpent holding His divine flute in one hand and with the other hand, He holds his tail. The soft and gentle smile on Lord’s moonlike face describes His extremely merciful nature towards all individual souls. Kaliya being touched by the lotus feet of Krishna got blessed and purified. After this sign, his wife, Nagapatni, offered her respectful obeisance unto Lord Krishna’s lotus feet and prayed to Him for the safety of his husband’s life. This painting is thus totally absorbed in auspiciousness.
