Inlaid with pure gold over the icons, the Tanjore painting that you see here portrays Lord Kartikeya who is also known as God of War, along with his two eternal consorts Devasena, the daughter of Lord Indra and Valli, a beautiful huntress. Together with his devoted wives, who are also his internal potency, the lord becomes complete. Lord Kartikeya is considered an important deity in Shaivism and is worshiped in South India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc. where he is known as Murugan. He is considered to be the killer of a great demon Taraka.
Under a beautiful prabhavali, the youthful and noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, Kartikeya, stands tall on an elevated platform with Devasena on his left and Valli on his right. This entire painting has been elaborately embellished with 24 Karat gold precisely studded with sequences of shining stones. Both Devasena and Valli are dressed in a beautiful saree and bedecked with several ornaments and their head is adorned with a jeweled crown. The body complexion of Devasena is like the molten gold whereas Valli is greenish in color. They hold a lotus flower in one hand and bring a smile on their face. The warrior god at the center is present in his four-handed form holding a trident and an indistinct object in his two upper hands, while the lower hands remain in Abhaya and Varada Mudra. His divine spear called Vel which represents his shakti (power) is also carried by him. He is clad in a perfectly pleated dhoti down to his ankles and a dupatta is worn over his strong shoulders and arms. He is accompanied with his divine mount peacock at the back who is always engaged in his lord’s loving service.
