Wearing a golden loincloth and a mace in hand, Lord Hanuman stands in this Tanjore painting, fearless and valorous. Being the son of the wind god, Vayu, Hanuman was born with a wide array of strong powers. When he was a child, Hanuman was a very mischievous child who began to bother rishis with his tricks. So, eventually, they put a mild curse on him that he would forget about his powers until someone reminded him of them. After the abduction of Devi Sita, Lord Rama asked Hanuman to find where and how she was being kept in Lanka.
In order to do that, the monkey god would have to cross the ocean all the way over to Lanka but he was confused about how he was going to accomplish that. It was then that Jambavantha reminded him of his powers and encouraged him. When he tries to go to Lanka, he is stopped by Surasa, the mother of serpents, who was supposed to test Hanuman on his strength. She tells him that she was sent by the gods to eat him. In response, Hanuman says that he must go find Sita and will return later. But she is adamant so he takes a tiny form and goes in and out of her mouth quickly. Thus, her task is fulfilled and he remains free to go and finish the task he was assigned.
