The gentle Lord Ganesha is seated in lalitasana. He is possessed of four arms, the chaturbhujadhari. Under the Kirtimukham at the zenith of His throne, He is the very picture of equanimity and serenity. This Tanjore painting is a fine example of the traditional art of Thanjavur in specific, and India in general.
The colour palette comprises deep, natural tones of red, blue, and green. In Tanjore paintings, solid, watery hues such as these are introduced in order to bring out the glittering gold embellishment. The embellishments, executed with pure gold, are the hallmark of an authentic Tanjore painting.
Lord Ganesha is seated on a throne of ruby- and emerald-studded gold. It features a high, stately backrest, upholstered in velvet. Green silk tapestry line the temple entrance-like archway in the foreground. The same is made with the same metallic gessowork and frames the subject of the composition.
