This painting magnificently depicts Lord Ganesha, the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. He is revered as the patron of science and arts. Also, known as Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha, he removes all the obstacles from the path of success of the devotees (especially in the path of bhakti) and is thus worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite.
Seated underneath a beautiful Prabhavali designed with typical Indian motifs and patterns, Lord Ganesha sits on an encrusted-gold elevated seat in lalitasana having four arms (chaturbhuja). Being the leader of all the ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva for which he is also known as Ganapati, he wears a huge jeweled crown on his head. Having the head of an elephant and the body of a human, he is attired in golden garments and adorned with several ornaments. He holds an elephant goad in his upper right hand, the noose (pasha) in the left hand, his broken tusk in the lower right hand and a modak in his left hand. His tusk turns towards right and is marked with a full-blown lotus flower which is the symbol of pure consciousness. His mount Mooshak is present near the lord’s right foot and is enjoying the delicious modak. Every bit of this painting has been elaborately embellished with pure gold coating with the sequences of tiny shining stones along the outlines. This is the main characteristic feature of Tanjore style artwork which makes it stand out from other ordinary paintings.
