This masterpiece portrays the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, Ganesha, also known as ‘Vighnaharta’. He is considered as the remover of obstacles, and thus, is worshiped first in all auspicious ceremonies and rites. In fact, not only does he remove obstacles of his devotees on the path of their material success, but also, he bestows his special mercy upon the ones who seek the path to spiritual enlightenment by giving them the knowledge of the Absolute Truth. He is also revered as the patron of science and arts.
Here is seated the chief of all the Ganas (attendants) of Lord Shiva on a beautiful throne in his Chaturbhuja form (four-armed). The back of the throne forms a big and magnificent aureole behind his upper back. He has an elephant head and the body of a human for which he is also known as Gajanana. Holding an elephant god in the upper right hand, the noose (pasha) in the left hand, a modak, his favorite sweet in the lower left hand, while the right hand is in the protective Abhaya Mudra. Attired in a silk dhoti and adorned with a flower garland, several gold ornaments, and a huge crown on his head. Note that his mount, mooshak (mouse) is also present with his master seated near his feet, who is ready to serve his master at any moment. To beautify the painting even more, the artist has embellished it with 24 Karat gold and intricate detailing on the Prabhavali, which is the prominent feature of the Tanjore artwork. Also, the vivid colors evoke the feeling of ecstasy and puts us into a state of trance.
