Son of Shiva-Parvati, prince of paraloka (otherworldly realm of existence, akin to the Abrahamaic heavens). On a multitiered throne of gold, upholstered with the finest velvet cushions, sits Lord Ganesha. Perfectly traditional iconography: a laddoo in one of His four hands; limbs in lalitasana. In keeping with the norm prevailing in South Indian temples and homes, there is a plethora of offerings at the feet of the deity.
The Ganesha painting that you see on this page is a Thanjavur painting. The luxuriant gold embellishment that you see on the Lord’s throne, the adornment on His person, and the temple entrance structure framing the seated figure, is a hallmark of the authentic work of the region. Not to mention the large-eyed countenance; the tall, elaborate crown; and the Kirtimukham motif on the backrest of His throne.
