An interesting portrayal of Lord Krishna with His two wives. In the Tanjore painting that you see on this page, Gopala, baala-roopa (child-form) of Krishna, is smothered by the maternal attention of Rukmini and Satyabhama. As such, this captures the fluid nature of mortal relationships.
Luxuriant proportions of gold embellishment, a characteristic feature of Tanjore paintings. Three templetops in the background, with red and green stones inlaid into the solid gold-inlaid sections. Winged apsaras flanking the central one, which also features the Kirtimukham motif.
The sarees of Rukmini and Satyabhama, and the adornment on Gopala’s pristine body, are made with the same metallic handiwork. In the foreground are the sacred tulsi plant, a pair of mother cows, and a couple of cowherds dressed in the saffron-coloured loincloth of the ascetic.
