The Baal Swaroopa of Krishna in Bhakti tradition, is the source of joy and divine aura for innumerable devotees. His innocent Lilas is a muse to the artists of India. In this Tanjore painting, using the traditional aesthetics of golden artistry, the artist has presented the subject of “Darbaar Krishna”- the royal court of Krishna. The deity sits in the center, on a regal throne, with his leg in his hand, taking his toe close to his mouth. Krishna is adorned marvelously and is surrounded by beautiful imagery. On the top of the canvas are heavenly beings showering floral offerings, while the foreground is populated by little gopas eating Makhan and a cow with her calf adding maternal virtues to the image.
Krishna is attended by a female attendant, who is holding a peacock and food offering to the child god. Perfection of delineation can be seen in the treatment of form and expressions of Krishna and the attendant, and the balanced use of colors unveils an aesthetic experience in this Thanjavur artwork.
