The most common aniconic form of Shiva is the phallus (lingam). According to Matsya Purana, Shiva's linga is the divine phallus, the source of the soul-seed which contains within it the essence of the entire cosmos. Linga, in fact is the sign of the transcendental, unseen Shiva. Here we see the linga arising out of the yoni-bhaga, which is square in shape with female features painted on it. It visually clarifies that the lower part represents female energy, the mother-goddess, Shiva's consort.
Most people prefer to worship a symbol, one that fills the mind with awe and gives shape in the unconscious to the fabulous idea behind the image. Together with the yoni-bhaga which forms its base, the lings represents the union of man and woman, Shiva and Shakti, the cosmic spirit combined with the cosmic substance that makes existence possible.
The snake is frequently incorporated into religious iconography. The two snakes around the linga are considered auspicious and believed to produce fertility and abundance.
A true Shaivite symbolic representational painting.
