A richly coloured pattachitra executed in vibrant vermillion tones. Vermillion is the colour of the feminine and the fecund. In this pattachitra that is a visual narrative of the life of Devi Lakshmi, it is the predominant colour. Pattachitra is the folk art of Orissa, a Vishnu-loving region, and refers to the devotional images (‘chitra’) produced on patta, a locally made fabric-based canvas.
The pattachitra that you see on this page is a superfine, composite painting. The panel at the centre of the patta depicts the seated dashabhujadharini Lakshmi, nestling in the belly of a fair lotus. This panel is flanked by two-panel columns, each depicting Her in unison with Her husband, Lord Vishnu.
A straight-line series of miniature panels along all four edges of the painting. They are episodes from the heavenly life of Lakshmi as She occupies Her place next to Her husband or interacts with other deities of the Hindu pantheon. A rare Lakshmi pattachitra such as this one is a devotional art collectible.
