An ornate, richly detailed iconography of Lord Shiva in the Tanjore idiom. The dancing figure of Shiva poised at the heart of the canvas resembles the stance of the Nataraja-roopa. The flaying locks and angavastram about Him are glittering with pure gold embellishment. The same goes for the aureole that surrounds Him as well as the temple pillars.
The temple pillars distinguish a section on either side of the canvas. Devi Kali is to the right of Shiva, while to the left stands Devi Parvati. Interestingly, the former is depicted as the chaturbhujadharini, while the latter is dvibhujadharini. In the section between the two standing Devi figures, at the base of Shiva’s pedestal, are the Shivagana engaged in paying homage to Nandi, His faithful companion.
This Thanjavur painting features a minimalistic colour palette. The azure and the pale-earth crimson serve to bring out the brilliance of the gold-layered gessowork, which is in turn studded with miniscule red and green stones resembling rubies and emeralds. This Tanjore painting captures the erstwhile glamour of ancient Indian temples.
