Lord Vitthala, also known as Vithoba, is another roopa (form) of Krishna. His iconography is traditionally Vaishnavite: midnight blue complexion, peeta-coloured (amber) clothing, and a composure of divine equanimity and compassion. The Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts Vitthala with His wife Rukmini.
Princess of Vidarbha, daughter of Bhishmaka, Devi Rukmini is the first of the wives of Vitthala. He had eloped with Her to rescue Her from Shishupala, to whom Her brother had betrothed Her. Within a circular framework they stand next to each other, attired in peeta silks. From the crowns on their heads to the ornaments down their torsos, these aspects of the Thanjavur painting have been inlaid with pure gold over dense gesso-work.
A crimson-coloured rug, strewn with flowers, beneath the lotus feet of the Lord and His Devi. All four edges of the canvas have been inlaid with solid gold and engraved with traditional motifs in perfect symmetry with each other.
