Vishnu-Lakshmi is a widely revered couple in Hinduism. He is the presiding deity over preservation of all that exists, while She is the presiding deity over wealth and resources (as such, She is indispensable to Him). The Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts Lord Vishnu with Ashtalakshmi or the eight (‘ashta’) roopas (forms) of Devi Lakshmi.
The canvas is divided into nine panels. The panel that contains the image of Vishnu has a low-central position and, in terms of proportion, is the equivalent of four of the relatively smaller Ashtalakshmi panels. Every aspect of the iconography contained within each panel, but for the face and hands and feet, are executed in pure gold-inlaid gessowork.
Given the scale at which each of the iconographies has been painted, it is best that one zooms into each panel to appreciate the precision and perfect symmetry of the painter’s workmanship. From the temple elements surrounding the standing Balaji figure to the space between the dual circular-angular edges of the Ashtalakshmi panel, a great deal of engraved gold has been used in this Tanjore painting.
