A simple portrait of a trio of lanterns. Hanging from a pristine wall but for the gigantic splotch of grey, blue, and yellow. The colours in the background bring out the vibrance of the lanterns. Unlit, but brilliantly coloured frames.
The one dangling down the centre is the longest of the lot. It is a gold ochre colour with overtones of silvery blue. The one to its left is a deep, jewel blue colour; while the one on the right is crimson. An interesting detail is the lack of a stand in the blue lantern.
The odd number three, as well as the notion of illumination by fire, are of great importance in Indian culture. So is the kind of lantern portrayed in this composition. As of today, it is a rare, almost vintage type.
