Batik is the technique of wax-resist dyeing that originated from Indonesia and is commonly used in various rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. Until recently batik was only made for dresses and tailored garments, but with the advent of its popularity and impressive style, it is now used in murals, paintings and interior decoration items in a livelier and brighter pattern. This one shown here is painted on a cotton fabric portraying the divine aura of Goddess Lakshmi, seated on her sacred mount, owl. The painter has beautifully stroked the layers of the owl’s feathers and its body. It seems as if the Goddess is flying past the streets, blessing her devotees, as can be analyzed by the painted houses, trees and a river at the base.

It is the night time and the sun is about to set, the fading rays of the sun, painted here in a marvellous blend of red, orange, white and yellow shades spread enticingly on the waters and on the entire landscape. Goddess Lakshmi in her charming persona is adorned in bright coloured outfits in red and green. The red flared dhoti is decorated with white flower motifs and a jewelled kamarband that complements the pattern of her crown. Holding the wealth pot and doob grass in her hands, she blesses devotees with the boon of wealth and prosperity.

The cosmic flames that arise from behind her form a stylized aureole to this batik painting that has its blaze spreading out is symbolic of her presence in all directions. This Goddess Lakshmi batik painting is a worthy piece to ornate your wall space.
