Kuchis-literally nomads are the indigenous people of Afghanistan known globally for their vibrant attire and exquisite jewellery. A member of this colourful and diligent tribe has been painted in the Batik style, making this painting a rare and beautiful amalgamation of two rich cultures- Afghanistan and Indonesia.
The young woman is clad in the traditional attire of her tribe folk, in a deep red and flaming orange shade, decorated with tiny dots and ethnic designs. On her high raised bun she wears an exquisite head ornament, accompanied by heavy earrings and a gorgeous necklace. All the ornaments are made of silver and studded with beads and semi-precious stones, available locally. The lady’s face appears contemplative, her presence on the canvas made prominent by the blue-hued background. On her lap sits a lamb, undoubtedly a prized possession for the Kuchis whose livelihood depends on their herd.
