The intricately designed thrones that are bedecked with flowers, the lovely curtains, and the exquisite framework, convey a glorious aura of richness, in this Tanjore-style painting. All three figures are attired in expensive clothes. Their heads have beautiful crowns on them. Their bodies are covered with magnificent pieces of jewellery. Goddess Lakshmi is the divine consort of Lord Vishnu. Seated on her throne of enlightenment (lotus flower), the charming Goddess urges her devotees to discard fear, and gain knowledge. The wise use of this knowledge should bring wealth and auspiciousness into their lives.
Kubera is the ruler of the yakshas/demi-Gods. This staunch devotee of Lord Shiva is the treasurer of the Gods too. His wife is seated beside him. The women on either side of them, are the human forms of his vast wealth. The mongoose in Kubera’s left hand is a symbol of victory. It declares his control over the Nagas (snakes), the guardians of treasures. The fish reposing on the lotus flower takes in/swallows wealth. Under the lotus is the Kubera Kolam, displaying certain numbers. Daily obeisance to this magic square, brings good fortune. Pots of gold, silver, and other types of treasure, are placed in front of Kubera.
