Vaishnava devotion is a popular theme in the Tanjore paintings of India. The Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts Lord Krishna in the company of His wife, the gentle and beautiful Rukmini. They are seated next to each other on an ornate swing with the limbs entwined in each other’s.
The divine couple are clad in gossamer silks of red and gold. Every element of adornment on them is made with pure gold inlay upon precisely demarcated gessowork. This is the signature element of the art of Thanjavur. More of these glittering metallic embellishments are to be found in the swing structure and the temple entrance-like frame along the foreground.
The typical elements of the traditional Thanjavur painting are intact in the composition. Natural-coloured upholstery along the archway of the temple entrance. A pale, solid-coloured background to bring out the glamour of the metallic embellishments. The parrot dangling from the archway is an amorous Vaishnavite symbol.
