Saptarshi Vashishta is engaged in the worship of Devi Kamadhenu. He is a Rgvedic sage of peerless insight, and Kamadhenu appears to Him in all Her bovine maternal glory. She is an iconographical oddity of Hinduism - She is a cow, but from the torso upwards She has the form of a fecund young woman, and She has wings with which She traverses across triloka.
The Tanjore painting that you see on this page depicts the lateral profiles of both Vashishta and Kamadhenu. There occurs a divine communion within the cool shade of a cherry tree. The sage is on a many-tiered plinth with a regally upholstered cushion on it. The Devi suckles a little calf while She accepts His offerings.
Vashishta’s clothing is executed with solid gold-layered gessowork. The adornment on His body are indicated by neatly aligned studded stones resembling, in terms of cut and colour, rubies and emeralds. The same applies to Kamadhenu’s ornaments as well as those of the calf at Her teats. The scarlet-coloured background has hints of what appears to be filigree upon zooming.
