Shahasrabhuj Lokeshvara is one of many forms of Avalokiteshvara with a thousand arms and eyes and is majorly known as Kannon in Japanese. The name “Shahasrabhuj'' translates to “thousand-armed” in Sanskrit. This manifestation of Avalokiteshvara is known for his compassion and his ability to assist countless beings simultaneously. It is also known that Kannon is usually depicted according to Guanyin which is a Chinese depiction of Avalokitesvara in a female form, which is why Kannon or Guanyin is depicted in more feminine features even if it is depicted in the male body.
In visual representations, Shahasrabhuj Lokeshvara is depicted with a thousand arms radiating outward from his body, each hand holding various symbolic objects such as the lotus flower, symbolizes purity and enlightenment, the jewel represents the fulfillment of wishes, the wheel of Dharma signifies the teachings of the Buddha, and the sword symbolizes the cutting through of ignorance and delusion.
In addition to his thousand arms, Shahasrabhuj Lokeshvara is usually depicted with a multitude of eyes covering his body. These eyes represent his omniscient awareness of the suffering of sentient beings and his ability to perceive their needs with clarity, compassion, and wisdom, Sahasrabhuja Lokeshvara is believed to work tirelessly to alleviate suffering and guide beings towards enlightenment.
