Annapoorna, the Hindu Devi of nourishment, is seated with a bowlful of rice in Her left hand. With the right, She ladles out a generous serving from the bowl, but the quantity remains intact. Such is the plenitude of Devi Annapoorna’s blessing. The fair, large-eyed beauty of Annapoorna makes a soothing image for the hungered and the devoted.
She is clad in a saree of vivid crimson silk. The brocade on it is made of pure gold inlay work, a signature element of the traditional Tanjore painting. More gold embellishment is to be found in the crown and the jewels of Devi Annapoorna, as well as the throne beneath Her, the halo behind Her head, and the temple entrance structure framing Her petite, seated figure.
In addition to the saree, the emerald-coloured curtains form a brilliant contrast against the metallics.
