A stunning work of art, made with months’ worth of superfine brushwork. A richly detailed depiction of the Hava Mahal of Jaipur. What you see on this page is a painting of its extensive Eastern facade, which was historically the zenana (women’s quarters).
This perfectly symmetrical structure features 953 jharokhas. Jharokha is the name given to the intricately latticeworked windows found in traditional Rajasthani architecture. The point of the jharokhas of Hava Mahal is to protect the privacy of the royal womenfolk, but allow them a view of the outside.
This one-of-a-kind honeycomb structure has been skilfully reproduced in the oil painting medium by Anup Gomay. The characteristic red and pink sandstone colour has been carefully mixed and reproduced, which at a glance gives the impression of a photograph.
